Trump asked UVA to sign the Compact for Academic Excellence — what does this mean?

Last week, President Trump asked nine top institutions— including the University of Virginia — to sign onto his “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education.” It would reward schools with priority federal benefits if they agree to comply with policies that would “advance the national interest.”

Interim President Mahoney appeared at Friday’s Faculty Senate meeting where he shared that there were things in the compact that were congruent with the University’s values but other things that make it “complicated to get to yes.”

The decision on whether or not to sign lies in the hands of Mahoney and the Board of Visitors.

WUVA’s Zoey Brooks breaks down the content of the Compact and what it could mean for UVA.
